Although I’ve been deep into the world of graphic design for several years now, only recently was I able to clearly articulate my design process. I like to think of this process as something I’ve been refining since day one; a set of events that have been carefully coordinated to produce the most pleasurable experience possible for both the client and myself. If we finish the process feeling excited and ready to share the final product with the world — that’s a GREAT feeling!
That said, I thought it would be fun to give you a peek into my design process! And who knows? If I ever have the joy of working with you, you’ll already be one step ahead of me.
While I love doing all kinds of graphic, web and UX design, I generally do a lot of branding, logo design and website design for businesses and bloggers. More often than not, my clients are coming to me with a brand new idea or in need of a complete rebrand or new look…
Thus, my design process almost always starts with a set of customized style boards.
I do a lot of research and talking with the client beforehand to get a solid idea of what’s in their head; doodles they’ve drawn, pictures they’ve seen, any inspiration they’ve come across that might influence the direction of the branding. I collect as much information as possible before diving into the style boards; I like to present multiple options, because these boards will ultimately guide the brand of their company or blog or project from here to the end, and it’s crucial that we’re on the same page with understanding the vision and story behind the finalized style board.
From here, the process goes off in a particular direction, depending on the design package we’re working with.
For Branding & Logo Design packages, I would move into logo design research, word spills and sketches — all work done off the computer prior to creating digital concepts. For Website Design packages, I spend more time online, researching web design options and trends and creating mockups in Photoshop to give the client an idea of what we will be translating to their website throughout the rest of the process. Either way, this step in the process is all about research, rough mockups/sketches and initial concept presentation. At this stage, my desk sort of looks like a mess of books, sketches and other inspiration…
The final steps in my process are all about refining, refining, refining!
From here, I work with the client (that’s you!) to perfect the logo, website, or whatever beautiful creation we’re working on together at this point. It’s a constant conversation between the two of us to finesse the product until you’re nothing but ecstatic about the end result! It’s exciting for us both as we wrap up and produce the final files — and you can finally share it with the world! I like to deliver all file formats and versions as requested, so you’re left with all the tools you need to continue updating your website or printing your logo to your heart’s desire.
