How are you doing, friend?
No, really. How are you and your family coping through the chaos and uncertainty of this new world?
Ok, it’s not really a new world; but there is SO much newness happening around us that it’s hard to think of it any other way. When a global pandemic turns our plans and goals and social calendar on its head, it’s difficult to find any sense of normalcy in it all.
Here’s the thing: this isn’t the first time chaos has ensued on some level, and it won’t be the last. The difference, of course, is that this is affecting EVERY SINGLE PERSON on this planet in a huge way. As far as chaos goes, this is probably the most extreme case most of us have experienced yet in our lifetimes.
So how does a person keep from spiraling into fear and anxiety every single day? Ignorance is bliss, but awareness of the world around you is crucial in this time.
Despite the size of the chaos or amount of unknown territory, the one thing I’ve found that helps me stay sane and semi-productive in any new space: routines.
Routines help us cultivate a sense of normalcy, peace, and certainty within our day.
A daily routine doesn’t have to be complex or overly involved; simple routines such as brewing a cup of coffee first thing in the morning, journaling in your gratitude planner before bed, or taking a thirty-minute walk during the day are all completely doable, no matter your commitments or timeline.
There’s a TON of research out there on the benefits of routines. They’re proven to provide comfort, lower stress, enhance sleep, and more.
Think about it: we’re living in a very uncertain, unpredictable world at the moment; when a person focuses on this fact for too long, it’s easy to let your mind wander out of control and into a space of anxious thoughts and fears. Routines help us combat this by creating parts of our day that remain stable and reliable through the uncertainty.
Now more than ever, we each NEED to soak in as much comfort, stress-lowering, sleep-enhancing habits as possible; and creating a simple, daily routine for yourself can do just that.
Need help generating a few ideas for what to include in your daily routine? Here’s a list to get you started!
Note: It’s not recommended to do ALL of the following every single day; start by choosing 1-3 items that excite and energize you, and work those into your day as a mini self-care checklist.
